As part of our Pretoria carpentry and cabinetmaking service we offer furniture maintenance and repairs. I have restored many antiques and repaired broken wooden furniture from a chair made in 1905 and tables to cabinets and desks.
Wooden chair repairs, Pretoria
Wooden chairs can suffer from many problems including just becoming lendelam, rocking more than a rocking horse. I split them apart on the joints and have been known to replace rails or modify mortice and tenon joints and strengthen with dowels. I never screw chairs together that have lost their tensile strength on joints as this is a surefire way to have a repeat of the problem is less than a year.
On some pieces matching the wood is very difficult but a little stain can hide a repair very effectively. If you have some quality chairs that are no longer doing the job as well as they should, I will collect them and bring them back as good as new.
Wooden Table repairs, Pretoria
One of my most memorable projects was a table that was 750mm high, that the movers tried to force down a passage that was 740mm wide, The passage won. The owner of the table phoned me thinking that it would be impossible to repair, but the table had much sentimental value so he thought I should at least look. The pile of firewood became legs again, the table was sanded and revarnished. It is still in the dining room of a happy client years later.
Antique Restoration, Pretoria
Antique Restoration is all done by hand, I find that machines don't have the same soft touch that a human hand does. This obviously means that it take longer.
